26/03/2003: Batman Update

Batman On Film has an unconfirmed report that Chris Nolan intends to have the script completed for his Batman film by the end of the summer. Pre-production would then follow.
It seems like Nolan will use the premise, title and characters of the already existing script Batman: The Frightening that recently leaked. Although the original Frightening script was conceived as a sequel, Christopher Nolan stated that he does want to make a film independent from the previous series.
Chris Nolan has also met with Batman vs Superman screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker and there existed some rumors that Walker would write the script for Nolan.

22/03/2003: Howard Hughes biopic script completed

Seems like I didn't read an January article about Chris Nolan being attached to a Batman project that Variety ran carefully enough. It also mentioned that Christopher Nolan had finished and handed in his script for the film about Hollywood producer Howard Hughes that will be starring Jim Carrey.

19/03/2003: Cinema16 now available

The DVD featuring short films by sixteen british directors - and including Christopher Nolan's 3 minute short Doodlebug - is now available via this site. Unfortunately it seems that the disk is only available for delivery to the UK and Republic of Ireland.

03/03/2003: Irréversible

As I saw that Irréversible - a French film by director Gaspar Noé - begins screening in the USA this week, I thought I should at least make a small reference here on the site.
I saw Irréversible around New Year's Eve and I have to say that I was - at least - affected in a certain way by it. You probably wonder why I even bother to mention it here. It's because Irréversible shares a certain point with Memento: It is arranged scene by scene in a backward fashion. While I thought at first that this rearrangement didn't serve a real purpose as it did in Memento. But there is a certain kind of sense that it makes - most noticeably when the film reaches its end.
I don't want to discuss the film's visual and psychological violence and I won't give a detailed review - just because I saw it in French without any subtitles and do not feel that I am in a position to judge this film. But I would like to hear your opinion at the board.

From Torben Schmidt comes a paper that puts emphases on the history of film noir, the typical characteristics of the neo-noir- and revenge-film-genre and of course on the plot and the narrative structure of Memento.
Many thanks to Torben for supplying this paper.

29/01/2003: Analyses, Thoughts & Ideas: Instant Karma: Leonard Shelby as The Ultimate Pragmatist

Jeff Gomez has written an intelligent essay on the theory of pragmatism in Memento.
Thanks again to Jeff for supplying the article.

28/01/2003: Chris Nolan to direct a Batman film?

According to an article from Variety Warner Brothers has hired Nolan to direct a Batman film for them.
"All I can say is that I grew up with Batman, I've been fascinated by him and I'm excited to contribute to the lore surrounding the character," Nolan said. "He is the most credible and realistic of the superheroes, and has the most complex human psychology. His superhero qualities come from within. He's not a magical character. I had a fantastic experience with the studio on 'Insomnia,' and I'm keen to repeat that experience."
