The Navigation

Disc 1:

It is really not that difficult to navigate the first disc once you have found out:
Watch: Lets you watch the movie
Listen: Lets you select the audio track
Read: Lets you select subtitles
Chapter: Lets you select a chapter to jump to
Comments: Lets you listen to the commentary track

The quesion is whose lies do you prefer ; yours or ours?

Note on the commentary:

One of the finest ideas is included in the commentary track. The commentary has in fact four different endings. If you select the commentary track and the manually swith to a point in the movie after 1:37h the commentary will begin to run different.

But if you pass the point at 1:37:15 in the movie, your dvd player will randomly select one of three different versions. This doesn't work on all DVD Players (mostly Software-Players eg. PowerDVD). So another propability to hear the other version is to select the commentary track and the switch to one of the last three chapter through the DVD's Menu.

The three versions begin to differ as Jimmy get dragged down the stairs. They are edited in a way that they all contain equal elements but differ hughly in what Nolan states regarding Teddy and his realtionship to Lenny.

1. Commentary Version:

This version doesn't really interpret it comments more the action. Note that this version matches the one you hear played backwards exactly.

2. Commentary Version:

The second version states that Teddy is lying in last scene. Nolan says that the audience sees "Don't believe his lies" through the whole movie, but that they are so desperately in the need for answers that they simply will believe Teddy. This version sounds to me like Chris Nolan tries to trick the listener into believing or maybe considering another solution. But Nolan completely dismisses that Lenny has willing tricked himself and thus written down that Teddy is a liar.

3. Commentary Version:

This version is the most interesting and worthwhile. Here Nolan states that Teddy says the truth in the last scene.

Funny thing to realize: The card that bears the option to see the reedited (reversed) version of the movie, changes its number from 2.6f to 2.6a.

News:

08/05/01: There is a new review of the Memento: Limited Edition available at DVD Talk. It contains a pretty detailed description of how the tests and riddles on the DVD work. The reviewer adds that Chris Nolan's commentary is "a terrific track, loaded with insight into the making of—and the meaning of—Memento". Video and Audio are both a step forward from the previous release.

Read the whole thing for more information.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the DVD is the promise that the film and DVD navigation will be strewn with puzzles which must be solved to proceed. These riddles are in a concept based on Leonard Shelby's police file. According to director Nolan, he has "enjoyed flexing my creative muscles to come up with something completely new and unique to the DVD format. I hope fans of Memento will enjoy not only the film, but also the extra features and challenges that the DVD offers." The film itself and the menu screens will be guarded by riddles who's clues lie in the film itself, throughout the special features, and even on the elaborate packaging created for the film.

Sundance Channel. The one thing that seems to be important to many people is the option to view the movie in chronological order (which was included on the UK Disc). There is no confirmation that this option will be included. I personally thing that this feature is nothing more than a gimmick. The movie wasn't written to be watched like this. It doesn't work like this. So this is maybe why the decision was made not to include a version with the movie out of order.

It seems like the Edition is now being officially called Limited Edition rather than just being a special one...

21/04/01: Okay I was wrong. As DVD Talk reports there will be an Easter Egg that will allow the user to view Memento in chronological order...

Memento DVD Special Edition (RC2)

Well, this 3 disc DVD Version of Memento is really the definte Memento DVD, but unfortunately for those of us who already own the old UK-DVD and the US Limited Editionversions there is not really much new stuff. For all others there is. If you own the Standart UK-Version of Memento you might consider buying this, because it contains Chris Nolan's Audio Commentary which would be the main reason. There is also a new - mediocre - interview with Guy Pearce and the interesting Anatomy of a scene documentary. The other features are nice, but no must-haves (as Jonathan Nolan's reading of his short story, and various photographs and sketches.

Full list of all the extra features:

- Audio commentary by director Christopher Nolan with different endings
- Interview with director Christopher Nolan
- Interview with star Guy Pearce
- Cast and crew Biographies
- Anatomy Of A Scene documentary
- Easter egg - reversed version of the film
- Shooting script split screen
- Reading by Jonathan Nolan of the short story Memento Mori
- Production stills and sketches gallery
- Props gallery
- International poster art gallery
- Concept art and bootleg cover art gallery
- Leonard's Journal
- International theatrical trailer
